How is Goodlawyer different?

Law Firms

What is it?

A tech platform to effortlessly connect with the perfect lawyer for you.

The traditional way to access legal services in Canada.

All of our lawyers must pass our vetting process before they can join our network. Once approved, they're publicly reviewed by clients and removed if their ratings fall too low. Our good lawyers are good people, and they're here to help.

There are more than 20,000 law firms in Canada. Finding the right lawyer for your situation is often a time consuming process, not to mention it's almost impossible to know if they're actually a good lawyer who cares about your problems.

Goodlawyer is proud to offer upfront fixed prices on exclusive microservices like Advice Sessions and Contract Reviews, as well as other common legal services. There are no retainer fees or billable hours — never pay a penny more than you agreed to.

Legal services in Canada are typically priced using the mysterious billable hour. They're rarely made public and for many law firms the final price of a service isn't calculated until after it's completed, leaving clients with a shocking and unclear bill.

Goodlawyer's fees are among the lowest in the country — nearly half of the traditional firm rates! How, you ask? Because we save lawyers hours of overhead in marketing and admin on each client, helping them provide legal services more efficiently. See our pricing page here.

Lawyers are professionals and their time is valuable, but marketing and admin account for up to 70% of a small firm or solo lawyer's time. They recover those sunk costs with expensive billable hours and pain-stakingly track their time to bill you in 6 minute increments.

On Goodlawyer, you get matched with a lawyer who actually knows your area of need. Never work with a jack-of-all-trades again — you've got a lawyer in every practice area available at your fingertips.

Only the largest law firms in Canada can guarantee coverage of all practice areas, and they're expensive. Almost all other small firms specialize in only one or two areas and aren't comfortable answering questions outside of their expertise.

Calling, emailing, or messaging Goodlawyer connects you directly with a member of the team. Every inquiry gets a response and close to 100% get answered within five minutes if sent during working hours.

A recent study showed that law firms only manage to answer 44% of phone calls and email response rates were even lower, at 40%. Put simply, law firms don't have time for good customer service. We do.

We are changing the way you think about lawyers— for good.

Frequently asked questions

What is business law?

Business law includes any and all laws that can affect business operations. This makes it a very broad field that is constantly evolving. Business lawyers must be familiar with standard business practices as well as business law.

Why should I contact a business lawyer?

Booking an Advice Session with a business lawyer can save your business from conflicts later on. It's a good choice to ensure you receive the legal counsel you need before making big decisions or entering contracts as it can protect you and your business. For example, a lawyer can review your standard contract to ensure it is legally binding and that you have all the protection you need if there is a problem in the future.

What does this contract mean?

If you have questions about a contract you can have it reviewed by a lawyer. Contracts are often illegal, invalid, or unenforceable and shouldn't always be taken at face value.

Can I adjust my corporation after I've created it?

Corporations can be modified at any time through a number of different mechanisms. This includes transfers of ownership, the appointment of new directors, and mergers and acquisitions of other companies.

How do I know my lawyer is good?

Every lawyer has been interviewed and background checked. They must be licensed and receive consistently positive reviews to remain on the platform.

What if I realize I have a larger legal need after my advice session?

Good lawyers can provide most legal services. The cost of the initial advice session will be deducted from the cost of the larger service.

What if my lawyer can't answer my questions?

If you are unsatisfied with the legal advice you receive from your lawyer, Goodlawyer will give you your money back. Simply email [email protected] to request a refund.

Will I be matched with a lawyer in my city?

You will be able to select the lawyer you want to work with. We partner with lawyers in every major Canadian city, but we can’t guarantee they will be available at all times.

Wasn't sure what to expect but was blown away by the value and quality of help I got through Goodlawyer for my small business! Will 100% be back.
